Freedom in Christ: Reject Legalism & Walk by Grace

Galatians

Pastor Luther Walker teaches on Galatians chapter 5, emphasizing that the Christian life is governed by grace and freedom in Christ rather than law-keeping for righteousness. He explains “walk” as the conduct of our lives and warns against those who hinder believers by introducing law principles to earn righteousness through actions. A little leaven (legalism) affects the whole group, and Paul’s persecution proves he did not preach circumcision or Mosaic law obedience for justification. Freedom in Christ is not a license to sin or indulge the flesh but an opportunity to serve one another in love. The works of the flesh include religious superstition (pharmakeia/sorcery), awe from buildings, places, or people mistaken for closeness to God, and manipulative religious appearances. Liberty must not cloak vice; believers honor all, love the brotherhood, fear God, and respect authority while expecting persecution for rejecting fleshly ways. The soul (emotional center) is not yet fully saved—only the spirit is born again—making emotions unreliable leaders; rational understanding of identity in Christ must guide. Suffering in the flesh by denying sinful desires ceases from sin and aligns life with God’s desirous will instead of human lusts, lewdness, licentiousness, revelry, or envy. Christians are called to liberty to love and serve fellow saints (seeking their best, including fellowship), fulfilling the law through love for one another as Christ loved. The mature law of liberty governs believers, producing happiness when lived out. The Christian life is fluid, not rigid rule-following, but manifesting Christ’s righteousness in every situation through the Spirit. The message concludes by previewing the next teaching on walking by the Spirit to govern life according to His desires.
