James

Wisdom

In this study, we continue through the Epistle of James, exploring the contrast between earthly and heavenly wisdom. James teaches that genuine wisdom is demonstrated through proper conduct, peaceable behavior, and works that reflect the fruit of the Spirit.

🔹 Review
Faith is Shown Through Works — James 2:18–26
Bridling the Tongue — James 3:1–12

🔹 The One Who Are Wise Among You — James 3:13–16
Wisdom is the proper use of knowledge—the ability to make sound, godly decisions based on truth and experience.
• The wise and learned among the saints are to demonstrate wisdom through proper conduct (James 3:13).

  • Conduct that is holy (1 Peter 1:15).

  • Honorable among the Gentiles (1 Peter 2:12).

  • Put off the former conduct of the old man (Ephesians 4:22).
    • Proper conduct is shown through works done in objectivity of mind (Galatians 5:23; Colossians 3:12).

  • Be peaceable, gentle, and ready to answer with calm objectivity (Titus 3:2; 1 Peter 3:15).
Warning Against Bitter Jealousy and Selfish Ambition (James 3:14).

  • These are works of the flesh (Galatians 5:20).

  • Relying on worldly philosophy or self-promotion opposes true wisdom (Colossians 2:8; Romans 12:16).
    Earthly Wisdom (James 3:15)

  • Arises from jealousy and ambition.

  • Is earthly, emotional, and demonic in nature (1 Timothy 4:1–4).
Result of Envy and Self-Seeking (James 3:16)

  • Produces confusion and disorder, not of God (1 Corinthians 14:33).

  • Leads to unproductive (“fallow”) works (Titus 2:8; John 3:20).

🔹 The Wisdom from Above — James 3:17–18
• True wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, and willing to yield to truth.
• It is full of mercy and good fruits, without discrimination or hypocrisy.
• The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

  • It reflects a calm and humble spirit.

  • Reveals righteousness apart from law (Romans 3:21).

  • Produces obedience to righteousness (Romans 6:19).
