Jesus as High Priest, Mediator & Head: Present Tense Salvation Explained

Christian Life

Pastor Billy Myron continues his series on the Christian life, focusing this session on God the Son’s role in present tense salvation and His position as Head of the Church (the body of Christ). He reviews past tense salvation: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:1-4), providing justification (Romans 4:25) and enabling believers to be dead to sin and live unto righteousness (1 Peter 2:21-25).

Christ’s present work includes:

  • High Priest (Hebrews 2:17-18; 5:5-6; 7:26-27; 8:1; 9:11-14) – after the order of Melchizedek, He offered Himself once as the perfect sacrifice, entered the heavenly Holy of Holies with His own blood, obtained eternal redemption, and purges the conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

  • Mediator of the New Covenant (Hebrews 8:6; 9:15; 1 Timothy 2:5) – based on His death, securing better promises and eternal inheritance.

  • Intercessor (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:24-25) – seated at the right hand of God, He ever lives to make intercession, saving believers to the uttermost so nothing can separate them from God’s love.

  • Advocate/Paraclete (1 John 2:1-2) – Jesus Christ the righteous pleads our case with the Father; the goal is that we sin not.

Believers are indwelt by Christ (Romans 8:10; 2 Corinthians 13:5; Colossians 1:27), which is the hope of glory and the source of eternal life (God’s quality of life, not merely endless duration). This indwelling means “Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20), enabling believers to manifest resurrection life by faith rather than live in the flesh.

Finally, Christ is the Head of the Church, His body (Ephesians 1:20-23; Colossians 1:15-20; 2:19). As Head, He supplies nourishment to every member through joints and bands, causing the body to grow with the increase of God. All believers are placed into this one body by the Holy Spirit at salvation.

The message emphasizes security: present tense salvation is not about possibly losing salvation but about how believers live out what God has already provided through the finished work of Christ. The roles of the Godhead (Father, Son, and next week the Holy Spirit) thoroughly equip believers for victory over sin and spiritual growth in this unique dispensation.
