Messianic Prophecy Series: Christ’s Lineage and the Promised Seed by Billy Myron

Messianic Prophecy Series — Christ’s Coming and Lineage (Intro)

Today we launch a series on Messianic prophecy, focusing on Christ’s coming and His lineage. Scripture presents a single promised “Seed” who would crush the serpent (Genesis 3:15), a descendant specifically traced through Abraham and Isaac, and ultimately through David. The New Testament affirms these promises, identifying Jesus as the promised Seed, the Prophet like Moses, the Son of the Highest, and the rightful Heir to David’s throne. We also note why Matthew and Luke include genealogies: to demonstrate both His Davidic descent and His legal heirship to the throne. Finally, we consider Israel’s kingdom expectations from passages like Jeremiah 23 and how those shaped first-century anticipation of Messiah.

Key Scriptures

  • Protoevangelium: Genesis 3:14–15

  • Abrahamic promises & the singular “Seed”: Genesis 17:7; 21:12; 22:15–18; Galatians 3:13–18

  • Prophet like Moses: Deuteronomy 18:15–19; fulfilled/quoted in Acts 3:19–26

  • Son and King: Psalm 2:7; Psalm 132:11; Luke 1:30–33

  • Davidic lineage affirmed: Acts 13:22–23; Romans 1:1–4

  • Righteous Branch / Davidic King: Jeremiah 23:5–8

  • Genealogies establishing heirship: Matthew 1; Luke 3

Big Ideas

  • The promised “Seed” is singular and identified as Christ (Galatians 3:16).

  • Messiah would arise from Abraham through Isaac, then David, fulfilling covenant promises.

  • Jesus is the Prophet like Moses, the Son of the Highest, and the rightful Davidic King.

  • Matthew and Luke record genealogies to verify both descent and legal heirship.

  • Many Jews expected Messiah’s immediate reign (e.g., Jeremiah 23), which shaped first-century expectations (cf. Acts 1:6).
