Messianic Prophecy Series: The Birth of Jesus

By Billy Myron

This message (third in the series) explores Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah’s birth and how the Gospels record their precise fulfillment. We trace the promised birthplace (Bethlehem), the virgin conception, and the providential movements to and from Egypt—showing that each circumstance was foretold and confirms Jesus as the promised Christ.

Key Points

  • Bethlehem foretold: Micah 5:2 identifies Bethlehem as the Messiah’s birthplace; Matthew 2 shows the scribes recognized this when asked by Herod.

  • Historical setting: Luke 2 explains the census under Caesar Augustus that moved Joseph and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem, fulfilling the prophecy.

  • Virgin conception: Isaiah 7:14’s sign is realized in Mary’s virginal conception (Luke 1:26–35; Matthew 1:18–23; LXX uses parthenos, “virgin”).

  • Wise men and Herod: The Magi’s visit and Herod’s plot lead to further fulfillments—Rachel weeping (Jeremiah 31:15; Matthew 2:16–18).

  • Out of Egypt: The family’s flight to Egypt and return fulfills Hosea 11:1 (Matthew 2:13–15).

  • Apparent contradictions resolved: Though Jesus grew up in Nazareth, Scripture records His birth in Bethlehem and journey through Egypt, harmonizing expectations about His origin.
