Messianic Prophecy Series—Episode 1: Expected Messiah, Unexpected Cross

Billy Myron

We’re kicking off a new series exploring Messianic prophecy—what the Scriptures foretold about Christ’s coming, death, and resurrection, and how those prophecies shaped (and sometimes shocked) expectations in the first century.

In this episode, we trace how the New Testament repeatedly anchors the gospel in fulfilled prophecy. From Peter’s message to Cornelius (Acts 10) and Paul’s synagogue address (Acts 13), to the disciples’ surprise on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24), we see that the Messiah’s suffering and resurrection were foretold—even if many expected only the kingdom.

Highlights

  • Why Peter proclaims that “all the prophets bear witness” to Christ (Acts 10:34–43).

  • How Paul proves the resurrection from the Psalms (Acts 13:16–41; cf. Psalms 2; 16).

  • The widespread expectation of Messiah (John 1:40–41; John 4:25–26; Matthew 16:13–17).

  • The unexpectedness of the cross (Matthew 16:21–23; Luke 24:13–27).

  • Why the kingdom awaits the future (Acts 1:6) while we live in the present dispensation of grace.

  • The gospel “according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:1–4).
