Religious Works of the Flesh (Galatians 5:20).
Religious Superstitious Awe
Religious Music is designed to appease the sin nature.
Psychoacoustics (how we perceive sound), psychology, and neuroscience.
The BRECVEMA (brek-veh-mah) model.
Emotions arise from expectation and surprise in harmony, melody, or rhythm.
Brain stem reflexes—Harsh, loud, or sudden sound trigger arousal or startles responses.
Emotional contagion—Mirroring the emotions conveyed by the tempo, articulation, or timbre.
Music can manipulate emotions by patters of tension/release, arousal, and association.
CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) is centered around direct, personal, experiential encounter with God’s presence through music.
They use a build and release emotional arc to foster intimacy, awe, surrender, and a corporate encounter with God.
Simply, repetitive harmonic structure.
Dynamic builds and emotional contours by layering drums, guitars, pads/synths).
Tempo between 70—90 BPM. Steady 4/4 pulse encouraging swaying or clapping.
Vocals use upward leaps on key works like “holy”, “Jesus”, “praise”.
Influenced by modern pop/ rock. Lush reverb/delay for atmosphere, ambient pad/synths for immersion, evoking a sense of awe with major keys and bright timbres or tender intimacy with minor shifts and softer sections.
We worship God in spirit and truth (John 4:24).
We do not worship God through our soul, which is the center of our emotions (1 Corinthians 2:14).
We serve God with our emotions, not praise or worship Him (Colossians 3:23).
Worship is giving God credit for Who He is and What He has Done (Revelation 4:10–11).
Praise is the fruit of our lips confessing His name (Hebrews 13:15).
There is nothing inherently wrong with music
When music is used to make you feel closer to God, it is manipulating your emotions.
Good music focuses the mind on the truth, primarily invoking a rational response: It does not make you feel closer to God; it reminds you of how close you are to God.
The Spiritual Christian will sing and make melody in his heart unto the Lord (Ephesians 5:18–20).
Heresies—a deliberate choice to separate, factions

False teachers bring in destructive factions (2 Peter 2:1).
Works of Self Seeking and Gratification (Galatians 5:20–21).
Enmity—hostility towards others. A profound state of rebellion.
The carnal mind is at enmity with God (Romans 8:7).
Friendship with the world is enmity towards God (James 4:4).
Strife—an underlying state of hostility
Unrighteous in nature (Romans 1:29).
A result of being carnal (1 Corinthians 3:3).
Some preach Christ out of strife and envy (Philippians 1:5).
Those who teach contrary to the healthy words of the Lord and the teaching according to godliness are obsessed with disputing and arguments which bring strife (1 Timothy 6:3–4).
We are to avoid strife, rejecting a divisive man (Titus 3:9).
Jealousy—an intense burning emotion towards an object or ideal.
The flesh uses this intense burning emotion in a negative manner.
Out of a feeling of resentment comes the desire to have what another person possesses.
Relates to worldly wisdom (James 3:13–16).
Inner Burning Anger—an internal heat of passion or anger.

Comes from being carnal (2 Corinthians 12:20).
Selfish Ambition—a disposition or conduct motivated by personal advantage rather than truth.
Will not obey the truth (Romans 2:8).
A result of being carnal (2 Corinthians 12:20).
Some preach Christ out of selfish ambition (Philippians 1:16).
Relates to earthly, demonic wisdom (James 3:14–16).
Division—the fracturing of a group by severing.
We are to note those who cause divisions and avoid them (Romans 16:17).
A result of being carnal and relates to following men (1 Corinthians 3:3–4).
Envy—a malicious resentment towards the success or prosperity of another person.

Some preach Christ out of envy (Philippians 1:15).

This type of intoxication is not limited to alcohol (Revelation 17:6).
The result of a carnal lifestyle (1 Corinthians 5:11; 6:10).
Revelry—Boisterous festivities.
Done in the darkness (Romans 13:13).
Involves lewdness, strong desires, drunkenness, and abominable idolatries (1 Peter 4:3).
And Such Like
Those who are characterized by practicing these things will not inherent the Kingdom of God (Galatians 5:21).
Paul is describing someone who is characterized by these practices.
The Christian cannot habitually sin (1 John 3:9).
The grace believer once walked in darkness but is now light in the LORD (Ephesians 5:8).

And let us consider one another in stirring up love and proper works, not forsaking the gathering of ourselves, just as is the habit of some, but encouraging, and so much more as we see the day approaching (Hebrews chapter 10:24–25).
In a world that often pulls us toward isolation, coming together face-to-face provides encouragement, clarity, and spiritual strength. At Word of Grace Studies, we gather because we value the opportunity to build up one another in truth, to stir up love and proper works, and to grow together in the faith. Whether you can come and fellowship with us or at a local assembly in your area, do not forsake the assembling of the saints, your presence matters—for your benefit and for the encouragement of others.
