The Church is of the firstfruits

James by Pastor Luther Walker

The Firstfruits of His Creatures (James 1:16–18)

In this study, we explore James 1:16–18 and the profound truth that the Church is the firstfruits of God’s creatures, brought forth by His will. We will see how every good and mature gift comes from the Father of lights, and how these gifts equip us to walk as sons in Christ.

Key Themes Covered:

  • Do not be deceived: Sin and bad company corrupt, but God has freed us (James 1:16; 1 Corinthians 6:9; 15:33; Galatians 6:7).

  • Every good and mature gift: These gifts are for the Church, complete when given, preparing us for every good work (James 1:17; 2 Timothy 2:21; 3:17; Ephesians 2:10).

  • The Father of lights: God dwells in unapproachable light, has no shadow of turning, and His presence fills all things (James 1:17; 1 Timothy 6:16; 1 John 1:7; Ephesians 5:8; Psalm 139:7–10).

  • Brought forth by His will: The Church exists by God’s determination, washed, regenerated, and born of His incorruptible seed (James 1:18; Ephesians 1:4; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23).

  • The firstfruits: Christ is the firstfruits of resurrection, and we as grace believers share in the firstfruits of the Spirit and the resurrection life (1 Corinthians 15:20, 23; Romans 8:23).

This message encourages us to walk in the light, to live out the good works God has prepared, and to embrace our identity as the firstfruits of His creatures in Christ.
