1 John: Walking in the Light

Billy Myron

This section of 1 John emphasizes that God is light with no darkness in Him. True fellowship requires walking in the light, not darkness. Being spiritual involves recognizing one’s spiritual nature and avoiding carnality. Fellowship is defined as partnership and sharing, first with God through union with His Son (citing 1 Cor 1:9), participation in sufferings (Phil 3:10), and the Holy Spirit (Phil 2:1), and second with believers as a sacrificial act (Heb 13:16), partnership in the gospel (Phil 1:7), and effective sharing of faith (Philemon 6). Light represents divine revelation, truth, and purity (2 Cor 4:6; John 1), while darkness signifies blindness, ignorance, and the state of the unsaved (John 12:35; Rom 1:21; Eph 4:18). Believers must walk in light, avoiding unequal yoking with darkness (2 Cor 6:14), exposing unfruitful works (Eph 5:11), and putting off darkness (Rom 13:12). The passage stresses that claiming fellowship with God while living in darkness is a lie; walking in light brings mutual fellowship among believers and cleansing through Jesus’ blood.
